Re: first Nova Scotia launch event for the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, to be held on Monday, February 6^th, at 8:00 am at Province House.

We’re looking for 25 smartly turned-out senior Scouts, Venturer Scouts and Rover Scouts to participate in this event. Cadets and girl guides will also be in attendance. This includes a special signing ceremony of a book that will be forwarded on to Buckingham Palace, and breakfast.

Due to space restrictions, parents can’t attend with their youth. The youth are to be dropped off at 8 am and picked up at 9:30 am. Yes, I know it’s a school day!

(I’m on the ‘event agenda’ as the rep. from Scouts Canada but that’s because I’m the person whom the Protocol Office called. If Richard can attend or someone else who wants to go, that’s fine with me.)

Anyway, it’s more important that we get the youth to attend. I’m hoping that you all can forward this email to your scouting contacts, who can then email me with their earnest desire to attend this auspicious event. Someone will let the youth and their families know by Feb. 2 if they will be part of the group.

Those interested please email me (Christine) your name, parents’ names if under 18, email address, phone number, section and group.

For parents’ information, the Scouts Canada rep in attendance will be ‘in charge’ and will stay with the youth until everyone is picked up.

I really need your assistance with this project – please!

In early May of 2011, we asked that our groups submit their bank account information and a void cheque direct to our National Office with a copy to be sent to Nanci Douglas at our NS Council Office.

Unfortunately, there was not a good response to that earlier request … so I’m back asking for your assistance. If you could forward the following information, to my attention, either by mail to the NS Council Office (our address is at the bottom of this page) or you can email direct to me, ndouglas@scouts.ca .

I will look after the seeing that this necessary information reaches the correct person in our National Office.

Please – this is what I require from every group and area.

· Name and address of the banking institution

· Name of the account holder as it appears on the bank statements/cheques

· Transit number

· Account number

· A void cheque (a scanned copy will be fine)

We should also have a contact name and phone number or email for the bank account in the event there are issues with the payments and we need to contact someone to resolve the issue.

Please forward to me as soon as possible – I ask that I have the above information in my hands by January 27th.

As you have probably heard one of the biggest benefits of the new registration system, Myscouts, is the ability to register on-line. As we get closer to the implementation of Myscouts, one of the prerequisites for on-line registration is the setup of the group bank account on the National system to deposit group proceeds collected through on-line payment.

Once collected, the appropriate fee for each level of Scouts Canada will be separated and forwarded by Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) to the appropriate council and group. In order to accomplish this task we will need the above information.

November 21st, 2011- Sixers & Second camp planning

Sixers & Second camp is fast approaching. We will be having a planning
meeting to organize projects and work out the details of this camp.
Wewould like one representative from each group planning on attending
the camp to participate in this meeting so everyone gets a chance for input.

This meeting will take place Sunday December 4th from 7-9pm at Grace
United Church at the intersection of King and Ochterloney. Please use
the basement entrance off King Street.

We would like a confirmation from each group at this meeting if they
are going and how many youth and adults they plan on bringing. It is
imperative that if you are not going to be at this meeting to please
e-mail us at this address to let us know. We will be ordering badges,
food and supplies so we need to have a good idea of our numbers. At
this point we just need numbers, the deadline for payment will be set
at the December meeting.

So please come with your ideas.

Group Committee members need both the Core Course and the Group Committee Course to obtain WB1 recognition. There is no online training for Group Committee. The next available course is:

Registration kits are now ready for pick-up from the Scout Office. Along with the kits there is a ‘Recruitment Took Kit’ for each group. The Council Office is opened, Monday through Friday, 8:30 – 4:30pm.

If you aren't able to pickup your Group's kit please contact the office so that alternate arrangements can be made.

This year we are planning to do something a little bit different for the ‘Popcorn Campaign Kickoff’!!! Yum and this would be that we’ll hold a SUPPER Kickoff for Popcorn … I’ll bring the casseroles, salad, dessert etc. but I will need a bit of assistance from you to make this happen.

For your group would you please note that I need to ask you to invite… ‘yourself and your group popcorn coordinator’. I do realize that in some cases the group commissioner and the popcorn coordinator are one in the same person so I would then only see 1 person from your group..

SONG OF THE EAGLE

The Nova Scotia Council in pleased to announce that we will be visited in early August by a group of Scouting youth from the USA who specialize in Native American dancing. This group is world recognized and highly sought after and we are extremely fortunate to have them visit Nova Scotia on their current Eastern North American tour. Check out www.kwahadi.com

The group will be holding a performance at 7:30 p.m. on August 2, 2011 at Exhibition Park Arena where they will display their skills. They will be joined in this performance by traditional dancers from First Nations groups here in Nova Scotia. Proceeds from the sale of tickets for this performance will be used to support Scouting in N.S. Council.

This is an excellent opportunity for your Scouting youth to meet these visitors and to be exposed to what can be achieved from dedication and hard work. It is also a wonderful opportunity to help raise funds to support Scouting here in our Council.

Ticket prices are very reasonable and it will be a wonderful night of family entertainment. Please encourage your youth and parents to put this on their calendar and to invite their non-scouting friends as well.

I would like to thank those that have already stepped forward and offered to volunteer to help make the planned visit and performance of the Kwahadi Dancers (www.kwahadi.com) a great success. However there is still a great need for additional help as we move forward. Time is short and any assistance you may be able to offer would be greatly appreciated.

Last week I had the opportunity to meet with Steve Kent on his visit to NS Council. I filled him in on this opportunity and he was very supportive of it going ahead as he, like I, see it as a great opportunity to showcase scouting in our area and to raise our profile.

In my last email I outlined the probable sub-committee structure to pull this event off and would like to provide a bit more detail on what is required.

Food - Don Sanford, Don MacMillan and Mary MacMillan have volunteered to assist in this area. All told there will be a need to feed 60+ people 3 sit down meals plus prepare a bagged lunch. This group will be responsible for creating the menu, sourcing the required food supplies as well as preparation. An additional 2-3 volunteers would be great to give them a hand. If this is an area to can help out in please contact Don at donsanford@eastlink.ca (and cc myself) to let him know.

Venue - Other than myself, no one has come forward yet to help out. If you wish to do so please send me an email indicating your interest. This group will be tasked with the performance related tasks, developing the program, involving perhaps First Nations groups, inviting special guests, etc, etc, I am guessing needing 3-4 volunteers for this

Sightseeing - No names have come forward here either but would appreciate getting 3-4 volunteers here. The tentative plan is to bus the visitors to Citadel Hill for a tour of that property. Following this they would do a walking tour down to the waterfront where they would visit the Museum of the Atlantic. Following the museum they would take a ferry ride across the harbour and would re-board their bus for the trip back to Camp Harris. All told we likely will just have about a 5 hour window to accomplish this. I foresee breaking the 60 visitors into groups of 15-20 each accompanied by a Scouter from our area. So our need is a minimum 3-4 volunteers here.

Sponsorship - While we might be able to make this effort a financial success without sponsorship support, it would be very helpful if we will be able to obtain perhaps 2-3 sponsors who will contribute financially. To give everyone a sense of the $$ involved here, we are facing an approximate cost of perhaps as high as $5,000. This would be broken down into food costs, venue rental costs, sightseeing costs plus a contribution to the costs being incurred by the visitors to travel to Halifax. Really need probably 1-2 volunteers to tackle this

Ticket Sales - This is a key area to the hopefully successful effort we are undertaking. I am anticipating right now that we will need to sell our tickets at a $10 fee per attendee. I have a short list of venues and am anticipating that we will have a potential space capacity of between 1,000 - 1,400. The quick math is that if we sell out all tickets that we will gross between $10,000 - $14,000. What I would like to do is set up the tickets so that 50% of the ticket sales gross goes to the costs of organizing the event with the remaining 50% being divided among the Areas selling tickets (based on percentage of tickets sold). So a potential pot of $5,000 - 7,000 to split between the Areas. Any excess funds from the portion used to cover the fixed costs will be donated to the Council Scholarship fund. It is very important that we get tickets prepared and notices circulated advising of this event and start promoting it wherever/however we can. What I am hopeful of doing is using the Council office as the central point for ticket sales as they can coordinate sending tickets out, accepting credit cards for payment, etc, etc So there is a real pressing need for 2-3 volunteers to take on the ticket coordination role which will include designing the tickets, getting them printed and put in the hands of Council staff.

Publicity - Another key area to making this a success. We need to have as much public awareness of this event as we possibly can. I envision us getting a local radio station to "sponsor" us via free air time to promote the event. Also this group will need to make sure local scouting is aware of this opportunity and promote it wherever possible. I am hoping that Peter Koskolos will head this group in his capacity as head of the Council Publicity committee and that he will need perhaps 2-3 additional people to assist him.

I am hoping that we can get more volunteers over the next few days and that we then will schedule a series of conference calls to get each sub-group up and running with their tasks.

Answers to the questions from Group Commissioners' meeting last Sunday:

· The ability to only open up online registration and payment to returning members will not be possible.

· Current MMS users will be able to access this system in “read-only” mode after the cut-over to the new AMS.

· Clean up for the “Group Finder” can be done by going into the current MMS and updating the address of where sections meet as well as the contact information and when each section meet. The new Group Finder capability will using this information.

AMS training plan:

- Group registrars, treasurers, and commissioners will be provided with online detailed process maps to explain exact steps to follow for specific workflows, such as registration, renews, transfers etc. as well as training webinars (i.e. live and recorded eLearning sessions). Cub Brothers Mackenzie and Max Brauer save choking third brother Henry in Dartmouth

Quick thinking by two cub brothers save third brother from chocking on swallowed coin.

On June 1st Henry (3 1/2) years old swallowed a coin after he had gone to bed for the night.
Mackenzie and Max noticed that Henry was choking. They provided immediate first aid and got parent's attention.
Max attempted the Heimlich manoeuvre but was unable to dislodge the coin. Henry was rushed the IWK hospital in Halifax where they performed an operation to remove the coin. Fortunately, the coin did not cause any permanent injury.

Both Max and Mackenzie attended a St John first aid course
(We Can Help – First Aid and Safety Awareness Workshop for Kids) offered through 1st Woodlawn "B" Pack back in February of this year.

According to the Active Healthy Kids Canada Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth, Canadian children spend only 14 minutes (or eight per cent) of the after-school period engaged in heart-pumping physical activities.

And with only seven per cent of kids meeting the current Physical Activity Guidelines of 60 minutes of moderate-to vigorous-intensity physical activity per day, it’s not surprising that the Report Card grade for physical activity levels remains an F. That’s a grade we all want to raise!

On Sunday, May 22 the 1st Port Wallace Scout Troop & Venturer Company will be running the Locks Road water station for the Scotiabank Bluenose Marathon. We need volunteers to work the water station. There will be two shifts 9:30am to 12:00pm and 12:00pm to 4:30pm. There will be volunteer shirts and a special gift for each person that volunteers. It is a great time, we get to hang out with friends and help a great event at the same time.

Please let me know before Friday, April 8 if you can help. Let us know who and what shift you would like. Some folks are doing both shifts.

1. PRCs & Electronic Fingerprinting

From Halifax Regional Police via the Council/Scout Office:

"When leaders are applying for their PRCs, please remind them that they should check for their results 10 working days after their initial application. The PRC’s should be done in 10 days.

If a volunteer is flagged for fingerprinting, please have them go to the Council Office for a letter/form stating that the fingerprinting is for a volunteer position and has Scouts Canada on the letter/form. Since we have the new electronic fingerprinting, the results should be done in 7 days.

If they don’t hear from the police services they can come back to the same location and check. One thing to note on the electronic fingerprinting is, if the volunteer for example is a blacksmith, the electronic device sometimes cannot read the prints, therefore it ends up in Ottawa and can take up to 4 months. There is no fee for electronic fingerprinting."

Here it is March and winter just keeps marching on with snow, rain and another storm. Will it ever end? Yes it will and the next month that starts with “ M ” brings with it Spring weather, warm days and of course Glace Bay Scout-Guide May Camp.

What better place to spend the Victoria Day weekend than at Camp Carter on the beautiful Bras d’ Or Lakes. This is the 35th May Camp and promises to be the best ever.

I have attached all the information and would ask you to look it over and reply early if you decide to attend.

We only have room for 400 campers! We will also need people to help run the program so if you can spare some bodies let me know. Looking forward to seeing you at May Camp.

1. Climate Change badges & new Jumpstarts

Some of you have heard that the revised Climate Change badges will be launched in January 2011. See attached Cub Requirements and Scout requirements for this badge.

As well, visit Scouts Canada's website for some new Jumpstarts on this theme for Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. Expect more details in December's issue of Scouting Life.

2. Changes to WB1 requirements - followup

As a follow-up to Fred’s email (Notice Digest for Mon Nov 15), please note; NS is still offering Outdoors Skills courses and I recommend that you continue to promote it. It is valuable training.

Applications to Conduct Training will still need to be submitted by Course Managers and approved by DCC Training.

We will still present training certificates/cards to those who complete the course. This training will continue be recorded in the MMS.

Dartmouth Area had a good conference! We were well represented at Conference and from what I saw had a lot of fun too! Some of the highlights of that weekend....

Don Sanford was on the conference organizing committee. David Lincourt, Cris Hoar, Linda Dunn, Don Sanford, and Jamie Grigg each presented a session that were well received by attendees. Lynn Thomas and her team did a wonderful job staging Sat's lunch in a Fantasy Camp theme. A big Thank-you & Well Done to each of you!

At Saturday's banquet Mary Macleod received her long service award pin for 45 years of faithful service. Congratulations, Mary!

There are also some new faces on Council from Dartmouth. Congratulations to Don Sanford (Admin), Peter Comeau (Secretary), Herb Ripley (Properties) and two returning ones, John deRosenroll (Youth Commissioner), David Linford, (Technology).

Area was also recognized at the AGM for having increased its membership in 2009-10. This recognition belongs to all of you. I appreciate your time and effort in growing Scouting in Dartmouth. THANKS!

At the AGM the motion to allow lotteries and raffle tickets was defeated and the motion for one member one vote carried!

1. WB1 Training in October - 1st Reminder

Training courses start with 2 courses this month:

- WB1 Core Course: held on Sunday evening Oct 24 at Bedford Institute

of Oceanography (BIO).

This all section training (Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, & Rovers)

covers the fundamentals of basic program planning and delivery. A must

for a new leader starting out!

- WB1 Group Committee Course: held on Saturday Oct 30 all day at

Bethany United Church, 7171 Clinton Ave near Armdale Round About.

This training will help you better understand the function of Group Committee

covers the latest in BP&P!

2. The Annual Pumpkin Patch Event - Troop Service Project Opportunity

The Annual Pumpkin Patch Event will take place on October 30th at Shubie Park(by the Fairbanks Centre). A Troop is needed to build and babysit a fire while members of the community toast marshmallows. All supplies will be provided to run the activity. It would be a great opportunity for scouting as Derek Fisher the counsellor for Dartmouth East will be present as well as it get scouting out in the public eye.

I would like to make all groups aware of a new team that will be formed in Dartmouth Area, the Dartmouth Area Youth Action Team. This will be a team comprised of youth led by myself that will feed information to the Area Service Team and help me in my duties of Area Youth Commissioner.
I am looking for youth that would benefit from a position of leadership, willing to develop their skills. They must have a good work ethic and be opinionated critical thinkers.
If anyone can think of any youth in their respective sections that would be willing to take on a position on my team, and would like more information, please contact me!

I received this information from the National Program Services and feel you
should have this before our new scouting year begins. This info will be
valuable to new and returning scouters.

The attachments will be of interest to you also. Please continue to read the
body of this email before you open the attachments - they will make more
sense.

Jumpstart Programs

All Jumpstarts that were for sale in Scouts Shops are being posted on-line. Sections will be able to easily download and help plan their meetings. These should be live now. We now have 24 new Jumpstart Programs that were designed this spring, approx. 3 per Section. These are centered around the environment and climate change. Hopefully they will be ready for September launch as well.

They are missing Cub Jumpstart Programs that are tied to the Cub badge program. The national task force will be working on this in the very near future and let us know when they're ready.

Beaver Program Review

The task group working on the new Beaver Program improvements are continuing to develop the overall concepts and how the program will deal with White Tail Beavers in particular. As I receive more information on this, I will let you know.

Program Calendar

The Nat'l team has been working on a Program Calendar, this will be an on-line tool that will help Leaders with program ideas. The calendar will initially be populated with Jumpstart Programs and using your mouse, you will be able to guide the mouse over the dates/special events (i.e. Remembrance Day) and the embedded link will take you to the particular Jumpstart item.

There is a new National Quality Program Award; it is tied to the Quality Program Standards. More detail to follow soon on how Sections can earn their award- hopefully before the scouting season starts but for now, this is what I have. See attachments

Our softball league has a tournament scheduled for September 25-26. I was wondering if you would have any scouts interested in hosting the BBQ. There will be approximately 120 participants (male and female) in the tournament, spread throughout the 2 days, along with family/friends, etc. The tournament is held behind Prince Arthur Junior High and the BBQ area would be shaded and accessible by vehicle (for ease of setting up and taking down). I have heard of this being done in the past with other leagues, so not quite sure of the logistics, but basically the BBQ tent would be run by you and all monies raised would go to you.

MESSAGE FROM STEVE KENT, CHIEF COMMISSIONER:

On behalf of Rob Stewart, Executive Commissioner and CEO, I am pleased to
announce that a decision has been made regarding the location of our next
Canadian Jamboree, CJ 2013.
Our management team has selected the Camp Woods, Sylvan Lake site in
Northern Lights Council, Alberta.

This Scouts-owned site is large enough to support an event of approximately 6,000 (5,000 participants and leaders and 1000 offers of service). It is situated on the shores of Sylvan Lake, boasting a small beach, boat house with docks, large field area and flat and slightly rolling terrain. It has an infrastructure already in place that would rival Camp Tamaracouta when it comes to accessible buildings, electricity, water systems, road access and campable space; including a developed campground-like park.

It is within an easy 1 ½ hour drive from either Edmonton or Calgary airports, both of which are international in scale. It is serviced immediately by the Town of Sylvan Lake and then by the City of Red Deer (population 90,000; 20 minutes away).

Camp Woods is within the Northern Lights Council boundaries and the Council is supportive of holding a Canadian Jamboree on the site. We believe this site will make for an excellent event.

We are also pleased to confirm the appointment of Ian Mitchell as the
Jamboree Manager for CJ 2013. Ian will lead the overall planning
process. He did an exceptional job leading the organization of CJ'07.

SCOUTING has been invited to participate in a parade in honour of Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh.

Wow – what a wonderful opportunity this is for our youth to participate in the royal tour; a rare opportunity to be a part of history in the making. This is only the fifth time the Royal Couple have toured Nova Scotia since 1994.

Should you wish to be part of this event to “honour and celebrate the Queen”; then we have information and rules (of course).

Date: June 28, 2010

Location: Gather in the vacant lot on the corner of Pepperell & Robie Streets in
Halifax, across from the Atlantica Hotel (formally the Holiday Inn).

Time: 12:00 - 12:30 PM - Gather for assembly (this will take time to organize this number of participates). Protocol information will be given at this time.

At approximately 1 PM the group (consisting of approximately 700 Scouting and Guiding Members) will begin their march down Bell Road to the
Garrison Grounds to arrive at 1:30 PM. A senior officer from the
Cadet Corps will escort our group to a reserved area. This march is of particular interest to the media and will be broadcast so we request that all participating Scouting members be in full uniform, including blue pants (not jeans or sweats) and shoes (not sneakers).
